Ethiopian Prime minister Abiy Ahmed wins 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

Abiy Ahmed wins the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 for his efforts in ending a 20 year old conflict with their neighbours Eritrea. He is the current Prime Minister of Ethiopia and was elected in 2018.

According to the Norwegian Nobel Committe, he won because of his “efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea”, said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the Norwegian Nobel committee’s chair.

This is not the first time he has achieved something great. In July 2019, the prime minister led his country to a world record. Ethiopia planted more than 353 million trees in 12 hours to help the earth and fight against global warming. Abiy Ahmed also appointed the first female present of Ethiopia. Her name is Sahle-Work Zewde, a diplomat and former UN official. He appointed nearly 50 percent of women in his cabinet to make it gender balanced.
